Uphold brings back staking in the United Kingdom

Regulation&Security

February 03, 2025

Uphold has announced the resumption of its staking service in the United Kingdom following the implementation of an amendment to the UK Treasury Law on January 31, 2025.

The new regulation has removed the uncertainty that previously forced the company to suspend staking for UK users.

Removal of restrictions

The CEO of Uphold explained that the company was previously unable to continue staking in the country due to a legal "grey area." Now, thanks to the updated legislation, such services can operate without the risk of violations.

Market impact

Changes to the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) allow staking of crypto assets under the collective investment category, freeing them from stringent rules. The UK Treasury has confirmed that staking is distinct from traditional investments based on crypto companies.

The service is currently unavailable in the US and Europe. However, a return to these markets is planned for this year, pending regulatory easing.
