Tether integrates with Bitcoin Lightning, ushering in a new era of payments
January 31, 2025
Lightning Labs has announced support for the stablecoin Tether (USDT) on the Bitcoin Lightning network. This integration will be made possible by the Taproot Assets protocol, which expands blockchain functionality. The collaboration was revealed on January 30 at the Plan B conference in San Salvador by the CEOs of Tether and Lightning Labs.
The importance of the partnership
Bitcoin Lightning will enable fast and low-cost USDT transactions. Merchants accepting BTC will be able to easily integrate the stablecoin, providing an alternative to traditional payment systems. This is particularly important for volatile markets, where millions of people will gain access to this asset.
What does this mean?
Elizabeth Stark stated that millions of people will be able to use Bitcoin Lightning for instant dollar transfers. This opens up new opportunities for businesses, allowing them to accept BTC and USDT without extra costs. The innovation also paves the way for micropayments, AI-driven transactions, and autonomous payments in transportation.
