Regulation&Security

January 09, 2025

U.S. authorities have announced the date for the start of legal proceedings against Terra’s founder. The first hearing is scheduled for January 26, 2026. The judge noted that the date could be changed, but requests must be submitted within a week; otherwise, the date will be finalized.

The vast amount of evidence makes Do Kwon’s case one of the most significant in the financial sector. The investigation holds terabytes of data from devices, accounts, emails, trading histories, and witness statements. Additionally, some materials require translation from Korean, complicating the preparation process.

Charges and possible sentencing

Do Kwon faces eight charges, including securities fraud, commodities manipulation, cybercrimes, and money laundering, which was added in January 2025. If convicted, he could face up to 130 years in prison.

Preliminary hearing

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 6, 2025, to determine the next steps in the case. Until then, Do Kwon will remain in a New York correctional facility.
