Tap-to-earn is losing steam: clickers no longer work
May 06, 2025
Tap-to-earn is losing ground in Web3 gaming — the genre has failed to compete with deeper and more socially driven game formats. This opinion was expressed by a representative of one of the most popular clickers of 2024 in a comment to Cointelegraph.
Interest in Tap-To-Earn Has Run Its Course
According to him, simple games with endless tapping mechanics failed to maintain user engagement. «We will likely see new types of games because classic clickers are probably no longer viable,» the spokesperson noted.
After the initial hype around tap-to-earn, users began to lose motivation: many had already «extracted» all possible value and shifted to other formats of Web3 gaming. Examples of tokens actively used in such mechanics include NOT, HAMSTER, YES and others.
The Token Is No Longer The Core
The industry representative emphasized that the focus is changing: while quick earnings were once the main driver, today users are more interested in gameplay, interaction with friends, and group experiences.
The first generations of Web3 games failed to fully deliver on the social aspect, but still played an important role in spreading blockchain gaming to a wider audience.
Today, gamified projects are moving away from the simple concept of «farming tokens.» In newer games, the token is becoming just a component of the gameplay rather than the central goal. This marks a shift in direction — from earning tools to full-fledged entertainment products.
