Phishing attack on Soneium users

Regulation&Security

October 23, 2024

Fraudsters use nearly identical domains to bypass Google’s security systems. Their victim was the Soneium blockchain project from Sony.

How did the criminals' scheme work?

The security company Scam Sniffer reported a fake website masquerading as the legitimate Soneium platform.

This site, supposedly belonging to Sony, was created with the intent of stealing cryptocurrency funds from users.

The need to be vigilant

Scam Sniffer also noted that it is very easy to fall victim to this scam. Simply entering the wrong name — for example, “Someium” instead of “Soneium” — can lead to dire consequences.

Using sophisticated methods to circumvent security measures, the criminals were able to promote their ads without repercussions for a certain period of time.

This incident adds to the ever-growing list of phishing attacks related to cryptocurrency. It is known that in September alone, 10,800 phishing victims had cryptocurrency stolen amounting to over $46 million.
