OpenAI introduces AI video generator – Sora
December 10, 2024
OpenAI has introduced a new tool, Sora, that allows users to generate video clips based on text prompts, edit images, fill in missing frames, and expand content. The Blend feature is also available for combining scenes. Initially, Sora was available to a limited number of users, but it is now open to Pro and Plus subscription holders in the U.S. and other countries. A launch in Europe and the UK has not been announced yet.
Technology and features
Sora Turbo enables the generation of video clips ranging from 5 to 20 seconds in length, with resolutions from 480p to 1080p. Credits are required for usage, which are consumed based on the quality and length of the video. Pro and Plus subscriptions provide 1,000 and 10,000 credits per month, respectively. A 480p video costs between 20 and 150 credits, while a 1080p video ranges from 100 to 2,000 credits. Credits do not accumulate and expire as new ones are added.
Potential and limitations
The video generation platform is still in its early version and is not perfect, acknowledged OpenAI specialist Will Peebles. Despite the errors, the tool can already accelerate the creative process. Last November, testers uploaded it to the Hugging Face platform before its official release.
Impact on the video industry
Sora simplifies video production by enabling the creation of high-quality video content without editing skills. This opens up new possibilities for marketing, creative agencies, and content creators. The Blend feature allows for combining scenes into one video, which is useful for creating complex video narratives.
