Hester Peirce leads new SEC cryptocurrency task force

January 22, 2025

The SEC has formed a cryptocurrency task force led by Commissioner Hester Peirce. The initiative was announced by Acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda. The main goal of the group is to implement a proactive regulatory approach and develop transparent legal standards.

Task force composition and objectives

Richard Gabbert has been appointed Chief of Staff, while Taylor Escher will serve as Chief Policy Advisor. They will work with industry representatives and the public to develop clear regulatory frameworks for crypto assets, create straightforward registration pathways, and support innovation while maintaining market integrity.

Abandoning the previous approach

According to Uyeda, the SEC had previously relied too heavily on enforcement measures and untested legal interpretations, causing confusion in the market. The new strategy aims to address these issues by establishing clear rules and guidelines.

The initiative was launched during Uyeda's interim chairmanship until Paul Atkins assumes the role. Introducing clear standards for the crypto market could be a turning point, improving regulatory interaction with the industry and fostering innovation.
