
Hacker pleads guilty to stealing cryptocurrency worth more than $37 million

The criminal, who pleaded guilty, is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
Cryptocurrency theft
The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Evan Frederick Light, a resident of Indiana, gained illegal access to the computer servers of an investment company to steal client data.
He used the obtained information to steal cryptocurrency from nearly 600 victims who stored digital assets with the company.
Money laundering scheme
To cover his tracks, Light laundered the stolen funds through crypto mixers and used gambling websites. This helped him conceal his identity and the source of the illegally obtained cryptocurrencies.
According to the Department of Justice, he conspired with at least one unidentified criminal from 2021 to May 2023.
