The hacker group "Scattered Spider" has found itself at the center of a high-profile investigation. The members are accused of cyberattacks that cost their victims $11 million.

The U.S. prosecutors report that the criminals used phishing messages and SIM card swapping to hack cryptocurrency wallets, work accounts, and company databases.

How did the hackers operate?

The victims received fake messages warning them of account blocking. Under pressure, they clicked on phishing links and entered their data, which immediately fell into the hands of the criminals.

Among the victims were at least 29 individuals and 45 companies from the U.S., Canada, the UK, and India. One of the victims had digital assets worth over $6.3 million stolen.

Who is involved in the case?

The accused are five young people aged 20 to 25 from the U.S. and Scotland. They face charges of conspiracy and fraud, for which they could face up to 20 years in prison.

International investigation and co-conspirators

The FBI and the Scottish Police have joined the investigation. Investigators traced the group's actions to phishing websites registered by one of the accused.

The group is also mentioned in connection with attacks on Caesars Entertainment and MGM casinos in 2023. The involvement of the arrested individuals in these incidents has not been confirmed, but their connection to other crimes cannot be ruled out.
