November 04, 2024

Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecommunications provider in Europe, announced the launch of a new BTC mining project that will utilize excess energy from renewable sources.

This energy would typically remain unused, but now it will be converted into digital assets through an innovative mining process.

Partnership with other companies

The project is being implemented by Deutsche Telekom's subsidiary, MMS, in cooperation with Bankhaus Metzler. The mining installations will be located in the city of Backnang at the production site of Riva, a company specializing in the manufacture of metal and glass facades. The installations will be managed by Metis Solutions.

Role in regulating energy fluctuations

The growing use of renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines, presents challenges due to less predictable supply.

According to the Head of Digitalization and Web3 Infrastructure at Deutsche Telekom MMS, bitcoin mining can serve as a means to regulate fluctuations in the energy system.

Project goal

The pilot project aims to test the regulatory impact of bitcoin miners on the country’s power grid.

Participants, including Bankhaus Metzler and RIVA Engineering GmbH, seek to explore how excess energy can be used efficiently. Additionally, Bankhaus Metzler is considering the potential for offering new financial services in the digital asset space.
