Bitcoin and Ethereum suffer worst Q1 in seven years

Cryptocurrencies

April 01, 2025

The first quarter of 2025 turned out to be the worst in seven years for both Bitcoin and Ethereum. Bitcoin dropped by 11.82%, while Ethereum saw a much steeper decline of 45.41%.

This downturn stands in sharp contrast to the previous two years, when both assets showed strong gains. In Q1 2023 and Q1 2024, Bitcoin surged by over 68%, and Ethereum climbed by more than 50%.

Historically, Q1 has been a volatile period for Bitcoin — out of the last 13 years, it ended the quarter in the red seven times. Ethereum, however, had a better record, closing six out of nine first quarters in the green.

March Meltdown: Ethereum Leads the Drop

In March 2025, Bitcoin declined by 2.3%, marking its first negative monthly performance since 2021. Ethereum, however, suffered a much sharper loss of 18.69% — its worst March result in the past four years.

Since Ethereum’s inception, it has only closed March in the red three times — and 2025 has now been added to that list.

Bitcoin Holds Near $83,500, Ethereum at $1,860

At the end of the quarter, Bitcoin is trying to stay above $83,500, while Ethereum trades around $1,860.

Earlier, analysts predicted that the peak of the current bull cycle may occur in Q3 or Q4 of 2025, with Bitcoin potentially hitting $200,000.
