Prison sentence of former FTX executive reduced

Regulation&Security

December 27, 2024

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons has reported a reduction in the prison sentence of FTX's former top executive by one year compared to the original sentence.

Reasons for the change

The official reasons for Ryan Salame's reduced sentence have not been disclosed. However, it is worth noting that this change may be related to internal processes within the prison system or a special status granted to the inmate, such as cooperation with authorities or fulfilling certain conditions.

Other FTX case participants

Before pleading guilty, similar actions were taken by other key figures in the FTX case. For example, the former head of Alameda Research, Caroline Ellison, as well as FTX's CTO Gary Wang and engineering lead Nishad Singh, also pleaded guilty. Ellison, for her part, received a three-month sentence reduction and is now scheduled to be released on July 20, 2026.

Sentence for Sam Bankman-Fried

In November 2023, a jury found FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried guilty on all counts. In March 2024, the court sentenced him to 25 years in prison, but his lawyers have filed an appeal, and the sentence has not yet come into effect.

The situation surrounding FTX continues to evolve, and the future of other case participants remains uncertain.
