OpenAI strengthens U.S. nuclear security
January 31, 2025
U.S. national laboratories are utilizing OpenAI models for nuclear weapons security research. Up to 15,000 scientists will gain access to AI o1. Additionally, OpenAI and Microsoft are integrating one of the models into the Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos Laboratory for AI and high-performance computing.
Science and security
OpenAI’s technologies will be used to protect critical infrastructure, including enhancing the cybersecurity of the U.S. energy grid, as well as advancing the future of medicine by discovering new treatment and disease prevention methods. Furthermore, they will contribute to groundbreaking discoveries, deepening our understanding of mathematics and physics.
Risk mitigation and control
Research in nuclear weapons aims to reduce threats and safeguard nuclear materials. OpenAI emphasizes that the primary goal of AI is risk prevention and technological oversight. In July, the company announced its collaboration with Los Alamos Laboratory, and now the partnership is reaching a new level, unlocking new opportunities for science and security.
