October 11, 2024

On October 9, Fidelity submitted a statement to the Attorney General of the state of Maine, reporting a data breach that affected 77,099 clients. This represents a small portion of the company's total customer base of 51.5 million.

Incident сircumstances

The attacker gained access to clients' personal data, including names and other identifiers, from August 17 to August 19 through two newly created accounts. The unauthorized access was halted on August 19 when the company first detected the security breach.

Security measures and customer support

Fidelity, which manages $5 trillion in assets, brought external security experts to address the issue. The company emphasized that no third party had access to Fidelity customer accounts. Affected clients are being offered two years of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services through TransUnion Interactive.

This incident marks the fourth data breach at Fidelity in the last 12 months. The previous three occurred on March 4, March 18, and July 19.
